Make Your Home Cleaner, Warmer and Cheaper to Run

Energy prices keep rising. Many homeowners in Bristol want a better way to heat and power their homes. Solar panels help your home generate its own electricity from the sun. Air source heat pumps heat your home using energy from the air outside, even when it is cold in Bristol.

With both solar panels and heat pumps, you can lower your energy bills and reduce your reliance on gas. We are well reviewed, trusted local installers. We design every system to suit your home properly, so it works as it should from day one.

Heat Pumps and Solar Panels Are an Investment, Not a Cost

Solar panels and heat pumps are not just upgrades. They are long term investments.

They can:

  • Lower your monthly energy bills

  • Increase the value of your home

  • Protect you from rising fuel costs

  • Reduce carbon emissions

  • Prepare your home for the future

The UK is moving away from gas boilers. Many new homes no longer install them. Grants are often available to help with air source heat pump installations, making the switch more affordable.

Getting Solar Panels and or Heat Pumps on your Bristol House is Easy.

We keep the process straightforward and friendly.

1. Get Your Free Estimate

Every home is different, so we start by learning a little about yours. Click the link below for a free, no obligation estimate. You will get an idea of how much a solar panel installation, an air source heat pump, or a combination of both could work for your home. The estimate gives you a clear idea of potential costs and savings before you decide to go further.

2. Book a Home Visit

If you like the estimate, we can arrange a visit to your home. We charge a small fee for this because we want to check everything properly and thoroughly.

Heat pump systems need careful design. A well designed system keeps your home warm and runs efficiently, while poor design can lead to higher running costs.

During the visit, we carry out heat loss checks and technical calculations to make sure your air source heat pump installation in Bristol is suitable for your property, and how much you could save with solar panels.

3. Receive Your Clear Report

After the visit, you will receive a simple, easy to understand report showing:

  • Full system design

  • Expected energy savings

  • Battery storage options

  • Environmental and financial benefits

  • Installation costs and timescales

Then you can decide in your own time.

No pressure. Just clear, honest information.

Are Heat Pumps Efficient in Bristol’s Climate?

Bristol’s mild climate makes it one of the best areas in the UK for air source heat pumps. Unlike colder regions, temperatures rarely drop to extremes, which means heat pumps can run efficiently throughout the year.

Modern systems are designed to extract heat even in low temperatures, providing a consistent and reliable source of heating. For Bristol homeowners, this often translates into lower running costs compared to traditional gas boilers, especially when paired with a well-insulated home.

Over time, this efficiency helps reduce both energy bills and carbon emissions, making heat pumps a long-term investment rather than just a heating system upgrade.

How Much Can You Save with a Heat Pump?

One of the main reasons homeowners in Bristol are switching to heat pumps is the potential for long-term savings.

While upfront costs are higher than a standard boiler, running costs are typically lower due to the efficiency of the system. Heat pumps can produce several units of heat for every unit of electricity used, helping to reduce overall energy consumption.

Savings will depend on your current heating system, insulation levels, and energy usage, but many homeowners see a noticeable reduction in their energy bills over time—especially as gas prices continue to rise.

What’s Involved in Installing a Heat Pump?

Installing an air source heat pump is a straightforward process when handled by an experienced team.

It starts with a home survey to assess your current heating system, insulation, and space requirements. From there, a system is designed specifically for your property to ensure optimal performance.

The installation itself typically takes a few days, depending on the complexity of the system. Once complete, the system is fully tested and set up so you can start using it immediately.

Our goal is to make the entire process as simple and hassle-free as possible.

Heat Pumps vs Gas Boilers – What’s the Difference?

Traditional gas boilers generate heat by burning fuel, whereas air source heat pumps transfer heat from the outside air into your home.

This key difference makes heat pumps far more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. They also help reduce reliance on fossil fuels, which is becoming increasingly important as the UK moves towards lower-carbon heating solutions.

For many Bristol homeowners, switching to a heat pump is not just about immediate savings—it’s about future-proofing their home against rising energy costs and changing regulations.

Government Grants for Heat Pumps in Bristol

The UK government currently offers support to homeowners looking to install low-carbon heating systems through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.

This grant provides up to £7,500 towards the cost of installing an air source heat pump, significantly reducing the upfront investment.

As an MCS-certified installer, we can guide you through the process and ensure your system qualifies for available funding, making the switch more accessible and cost-effective.

Combining Heat Pumps with Solar Panels

For homeowners looking to maximise energy savings, combining a heat pump with solar panels is a powerful solution.

Solar panels generate electricity during the day, which can then be used to power your heat pump, reducing your reliance on the grid even further.

This combination not only lowers energy bills but also increases your home’s overall energy independence, making it a smart long-term investment.

Heat pump installation in Bristol

Fred and his team installed a comprehensive heat pump and underfloor heating package for our 180sqm bungalow during our renovation this year. When we bought the house, we knew we'd have to start again with the heating and we were keen to explore how a heat pump would work for us as we wanted a greener heating source. I spent a long time researching heat pumps as there was a lot of misleading information online and I came to realise that if we got the system designed correctly from the outset, and installed properly, it would be a success. And so the search began for an installer I could trust to deliver this...! I got 3 quotes from difference local companies who all had different attitudes to it. One was an old school method of chucking the heating in with a not very good output flooring system, oversizing the pump, and not really caring about efficiency. Another was an absolutely top line and overly expensive heat pump, with a less than ideal output flooring product - at quite a significant cost!. When I initially spoke with Fred at Rickman Heat, I was impressed with his attitude towards striving for the best efficiency and I felt that he would put a lot of work into the design. When the proposal arrived, I was delighted to see that not only was it indeed a simpler design that the other proposals, it also included a smaller heat pump as Fred felt that would be more than sufficient. It naturally then came out at a lower cost - with a higher efficiency. A big win! Fast forward a number of months, the system was installed professionally and I would say that out of all the trades we've had on site, the heating guys from Rickman heat have been the most professional and their attention to detail has been spot on. They've been a delight to have round and it's a pleasure to see their workmanship. We've now had the heating and hot water operational for a year and it has been working brilliantly. It has achieved a higher SCOP than forecast in Fred's design spec (which was already very high), and we couldn't be happier. As we drive it on a steady state mode on one large loop, the house is always warm and cosy throughout the winter months. Often when people visit the house in winter, one of the first things they remark on is how warm and balanced it is! I would certainly recommend Rickman Heat to anyone looking for a top performing heating solution!
